Course Description & Goals:

This course emphasizes the scholarship on leadership from a historical and contemporary perspective. The focus will be on the conceptual frameworks related to leadership models in the context of postsecondary education, including two- and four-year colleges and universities.

In all modules the specially written materials, activities, case studies, e-discussions, and additional readings are carefully integrated to prepare you for participation in both the online environment and face-to-face (f2f) activities and for the assessment of your work. At all times the emphasis is on personal reflection and the application of theory to practice.

Course Assessments Percentage Description

Induction module

5%

Students will complete an orientation to the course and on-line learning.  These activities are required. Students will be oriented to software, gaining access, using different functions, interacting in an online environment.  It is only after satisfying orientation activities, will a student be able to progress to the first module activity. Procrastination will lead to potentially finding yourself falling behind in the course. And there will be no Make-up work!

Participation

5%

Participation grade will reflect grades/points earned on quizzes, e-discussions, case studies, and group assignments.

Statement on organizational leadership

5%

Statement on organizational leadership: In this statement (four double-spaced pages maximum), students will select a particular leader and describe him or her using the concepts discussed in class. Emphasis will be the characteristics that have made this person a successful (or not successful) leader.

Mid-term examination

10%

Mid-term examination. In this assessment, students will be expected to apply concepts learned through reading and class discussion.

Scholarly writing project

40%

Scholarly writing project. Working collaboratively with the instructors, each student will identify a challenging research question on leadership. In addressing this question, the student will be expected to conduct a comprehensive review of the literature (to include empirical research) and to identify theoretical frameworks. Students are expected to share their drafts with their peers for feedback.

Leadership Portfolio

35%

Portfolios will reflect students work related to the leadership development and action plan.  It will serve to showcase students application of leadership theory and development relevant to individual leadership styles and organizational culture.   Aspects of student leadership portfolio will be presented during a face-to-face meeting.  Presentations will reflect integration of visual, graphic and artistic representations.

Missed Assignments and Extra Credit

Graded assignments can be made up only with good, legitimate, and verifiable reason. Otherwise, missed examinations or any graded element of the course may not be made up. Remember, there is no extra credit available in this course. Also keep in mind that grades are earned, they are not "given." Changes of grade are made only for legitimate reasons (e.g., clerical errors) after the semester has ended.


Attendance Policy:

Web Meetings:  You are expected to participate in the online environment through regular cyberspace attendance, and reading/posting of comments to discussion board. All students are expected to engage in discussion of course content at a level suitable for graduate study. Students should plan to log on  frequently, contribute to discussions, and complete all assignments by due dates for optimal results.

Face-to-face Meetings:  There will be 4 face-to-face class meetings.  These meetings are required; they are not optional. Students who do not show up for the face-to-face meetings will not pass the class.  The face-to-face meetings are important to the synthesis and application of the course concepts and frameworks.  It provides the opportunity for developing a community of learners through role play exercises, presentations, and dialoguing, requiring full participation toward gaining an understanding of leadership reflected in self and through interactions with others in different organizational contexts.

Plagiarism and Cheating of any kind on an examination, quiz, or assignment will result at least in an "F" for that assignment (and may, depending on the severity of the case, lead to an "F" for the entire course) and may be subject to appropriate referral to the Office of Student Conduct for further action.
